Save water and money

Run by agronomist Jeff Mitchell, Vine Science has a fifteen history of helping irrigators and environmental managers achieve better financial and environmental outcomes.

The business evolved after gaining accreditation for soil surveying from Ken Wetherby, an expert on Mallee soils and their potential for irrigated agriculture.

Vine Science began soil surveying and producing Irrigation and Drainage Management Plans across the region.

To complement this new service we decided that it was necessary to add some soil moisture monitoring products to our business to allow our clients to make good use of the IDMP reports we were providing. As we had been using MEA’s soil moisture monitoring equipment in our own vineyards and were very impressed with them, we approached MEA and this eventually led to us becoming the agent for all of MEA’s products across North West Victoria. Our range of products and services can help you manage and reduce water useage, target fertiliser programs, monitor nutrient levels, increase the efficiency of irrigation schedules, and monitor micro-climates.

Jeff Mitchell – Agronomist

After completing a Science degree in the early eighties, Jeff initially worked as a Chemist/Microbiologist in the food industry and later as a forensic scientist in the illicit drugs section of the Victorian State Forensic Science laboratory.

After a move back to the country in the late 1980′s, he commenced work as a chemist/microbiologist in the with quality control laboratory at the Lindemans winery in North West Victoria near Mildura.

Upon moving to Mildura his family built a house and established their first vineyard, later purchasing another three properties, eventually having a total vineyard of about 20ha in size.

After 13 years working in the wine industry, Jeff decided to form a small agronomy business, Vine Science Pty Ltd, which initially provided quality improvement tools to the wine grape growers in the region.

Jeff has commenced a Masters in GIS and Remote Sensing which will lead to further opportunities for the business to evolve.
